Four centuries ago, the largest parish in this area was the Parish of Holy Cross in Začretje. Zabok and Bedekovčina also belonged to this parish. Throughout history, the church has undergone various additions, so in the 17th century a new wooden tower was erected with two bells. The people called them “Bombač” and “Bimbač”. The changes that took place were of a practical nature. Namely, the western part of today's Square of the Croatian Queen Helena used to be a cemetery. The then owner of the town moved the cemetery just behind the church, and on the east side of the cemetery he built several new craft houses, thus actually laying the foundation for today's most beautiful place in the central part of Zagorje, Sveti Križ Začretje.
